Hogging: It is a process of cutting with a large chip load so as to effectively eliminate materials during a machining operation. It is used to produce a part or cavity whose dimensions are equal to the desired finished product.

Hand of Milling Cutters & End Mills: The terms ‘right hand’ or ‘left hand’ refers to the hand of rotations or hand of cut, and hand of flute helix.

  • Hand of rotation: The cutting tool revolves around so as to make a cut when seen from a position of a horizontal milling machine and facing the spindle.
  • Right-hand rotation: The cutting tool rotates counterclockwise when the tool is viewed from the shank. It is designed to rotate towards the right hand.
  • Left-hand rotation: The cutting tool rotates clockwise when the tool is viewed from the shank. It is designed to rotate toward the left hand.

Hand of flute helix: It is the direction where the flute twists away from the viewer around the axis of the tool when viewed from either end of the cutting tool.

  • Right-hand helix: Clockwise flute twist (to the right hand) left-hand helix – counterclockwise flute twist (to the left-hand) straight flutes – tools with their cutting edges in planes parallel to the tool axis (no helix).

Helix: It is a point in the path that will generate as it moves at a fixed rate of advance (spirals) along the surface of a cylinder.

Helix angle: The cutting edge angle which a helical cutting edge makes with a plane containing the tool’s axis.

Helical (spiral): It is a term that describes a cutting edge or flute which progresses uniformly around a cylindrical surface in an axial direction.

Infeed: It is the direction in which a workpiece is placed in a blade or a cutter.

Inlay: It is the process of decorating a surface by in-setting materials of different shades, color, texture and substances. It is ornamented in such a manner as to preserve a continuous and smooth plane.  Inlay uses a wide range of materials, which includes, wood, stone, ivory, glass, mother-of-pearl, and tortoiseshell.

Jig: It is a device that is used to make special cuts, guide a tool, or aid in woodworking operations.
